What is an Infrared Sauna’s Benefits?

Are Infrared Saunas Legit?

There is a lot of hype around the healing powers of infrared light right? Anti-aging, weight loss and detoxification are just a few of the claims made by the industry. But how is an infrared sauna different than a traditional sauna? Let’s dig into that!

Infrared light is absorbed by the body through waves similar to the way we absorb sunlight. When sunlight is emitted at it’s optimal level and we absorb that energy, we get therapeutic benefits but unlike the sun, we don’t have to soak up damaging rays along with the good stuff in an infrared machine. Using infrared light panels instead of heat to penetrate human tissue, the body is heated instead of the air around it. An intense sweat can be experienced at a much lower temperature than traditional saunas making the experience more comfortable and the therapeutic effects more relaxing.

So what are the therapeutic effects of infrared light?

Well, you name it!  Decreased blood pressure can be achieved as the light dilates blood vessels and reducing the volume of the inner lining.  30 minute sessions three times per week have been proven to significantly lower blood pressure.  Want to improve cardiovascular health and circulation?  Infrared saunas serve as a passive cardio workout by raising your core temperature and making your body work to cool itself.  Calories are burned in a much less stressful way.  300-600 calories in one session might we add! Detoxification?  Yep!  when the body sweats, it expels toxins, including heavy metals. By maintaining hydration, you can safely sweat out harmful toxins through your pores. A far infrared sauna is more effective than other saunas at sweating out toxins. Unlike other saunas where 97% of the sweat is water, our Sunlighten sauna  produces sweat that is only 85% water. The rest is harmful toxins such as cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins, heavy metals, sulfuric acid, sodium, ammonia, and uric acid.  But how does it promote anti-aging?  When near infrared is delivered at 880nm, without extreme heat or light, it can assist with wound healing, cell regeneration, anti-aging to the skin and collagen production.  NIR helps treat acne too. Acne is caused by an overproduction of oil that clogs pores. By sweating out the toxins from the pore,  it’s clearing them. A quick face wash  after the session, can help prevent the pores from clogging again.

Are there any reasons to avoid the infrared sauna or know if it its not best for you?

With all medical equipment, you can put yourself at risk if you do not understand how to use the product. It should not be implied or inferred that infrared sauna use is a cure or  can treat any disease. Proper hydration or electrolyte replacing water should be consumed prior to use. If any of the following medical conditions apply to you then consult your medical doctor prior to use.

  • Cardiovascular disease, obesity or diabetes- the heart rate has the potential to increased by 30bpm for every degree of core body temperature that is raised. Heat increases blood flow and cardiac output in an effort to transfer body heat to the outside environment via sweat.
  • Medications- individuals using prescription drugs that effect heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation should consult their physician. Some drugs classified as diuretics, barbiturates , anticholinergics, antihistamines and beta blockers put the individual at risk.
  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse- this leads to impaired judgment, increased heart rate and increased heat stress. It could also lead to unconsciousness.
  • Elderly & children- the ability to maintain core body temperature decreases with age. With children, the core body temperature raises much faster with the reduced ability to sweat and cool down. In both of these age groups it is best to use at lower temp and less time.
  • Diseases with poor ability to sweat to perspire- multiple sclerosis, central nervous system tumors, diabetes with neuropathy
  • Hemophiliacs or individuals prone to bleeding
  • Fever or sensitivity to heat- do not use the sauna until the fever has subsided
  • Pregnancy- consult your physician first
  • Menstruation- heating the lumbar area can increase menstrual flow
  • Acute Joint Injury- swelling normally occurs in the first 48 hours, may respond poorly to heating the tissue
  • Metal Implants, such as metal pins, rods, artificial joints- implants generally reflect infrared waves and are not heated, still best to consult your physician prior
  • Pacemakers/Defribillators- the magnets inside the infrared sauna can disrupt or inhibit the pacing set by the device

Are all Infrared Saunas the same?

Our Sunlighten mPulse Infrared sauna has the only  solocarbon heater on the market with patented 3 in 1  technology that allows the person to get all three infrared waves (near, mid and far) in one place and at one time.  So while you are treating your skin you can be detoxifying and lowering your blood pressure at the same time. Or you can choose a preset for a specific goal you have in mind.

So you have decided that you would benefit from infrared sauna use, what is next?

The recommended dosage for optimal benefits are 30-40minute sessions, 3 times a week. Infrared use should be integrated in to your exercise routine and healthy eating plan. Some use their time in the infrared for meditation or to relax from a busy day. Others use it at the beginning of their day to boost their metabolism and get their blood moving. If you only had time for 1 session a week, you’ll still see amazing benefits. At BEST we sell discounted packages and membership options. Check out our online booking system to find the time that works best for your schedule. Contact us with any additional questions you may have about our infrared sauna.
